Track Progress To Make Progress

When you’re deep in the job search process — especially after dozens or even hundreds of applications — it can become surprisingly hard to tell whether you are making real progress or simply running in place.

That uncertainty is frustrating. It can also be draining. As one IQ Catalyst client, Allison, put it: “I’m tired of being caught in this endless cycle of applications, feeling like I’m going nowhere.”

One way we help clients break that cycle is by turning the job search from one overwhelming challenge into a series of smaller, more manageable steps. Together, we assess each part of the process using a simple Green / Yellow / Red framework, based on how confident the client feels in that area. From there, the work becomes much clearer: turn reds into yellows, and yellows into greens.

Instead of feeling buried under one giant problem, they can identify the specific parts of the process that need the most attention. Second, it creates a visible sense of forward motion. When progress becomes easier to see, it becomes easier to believe in.

In one case, a client named Chris began with 1 green, 5 yellows, and 1 red. Five weeks later, he had moved to 7 greens, 1 yellow, and no reds. That kind of shift does more than improve a scorecard. It creates momentum, confidence, and a stronger sense of control.
