Scenes from a Career Boost Hackathon: Am I A Fit For This Job?

This January, I started working with Lyle, an early-career professional in tech sales who wanted a career change. He’d applied to dozens of jobs on LinkedIn and Indeed—with zero response.

“How do you know which jobs you’re a good fit for?” I asked. “Honestly?” he said. “I don’t. I’m just throwing applications against the wall and hoping something sticks.”

Lyle is far from alone. The physical act of applying for jobs has become so easy that many people fall into a cycle of volume over strategy. They apply over and over, tracking number of applications as a productivity metric—even if they have no idea whether they’re actually a good fit.

At IQ Catalyst, we help break this cycle.

In our Career Boost Hackathons, we use a proprietary 10-point Job Fit Rubric to help clients assess:

  • Whether they’re a strong match for a given role

  • What gaps they may need to address

  • Which applications are likely a waste of time

This scoring system does more than prioritize opportunities. It becomes a launchpad for resume improvements, positioning shifts, and smarter AI-supported applications.

The rubric is part alchemy—combining our deep experience in hiring, a practical understanding of how employers evaluate talent, and selective use of Generative AI to clarify language and strategy.

For Lyle, this clarity was the missing piece. By February, he’d stopped applying blindly. By April, he accepted a role as a Customer Success leader at a supply chain tech firm—a job he was well-aligned for, and one where his new employer could see the fit clearly, too.

Turns out, he was the right fit. We just helped him see it first.

Are you applying for jobs without a clear view of your “fit”? Let’s change that.
